New Zealand-Germany Energy Dialogue
Thank you to everyone who joined our webinar on Geothermal Energy on Thursday, 12th of October, within the New Zealand-Germany Energy Dialogue co-hosted with both the New Zealand and German Geothermal Associations.
Geothermal energy is a topic of mutual interest in Germany and New Zealand and offers opportunities for learning from each other. New Zealand is known for its large geothermal resources and has been utilizing it for power production and direct-use applications for the past several decades. Germany, on the other hand, has been employing it primarily for heating purposes and is planning to expand its use. So far, the Energy Dialogue between Germany and New Zealand has been focusing on hydrogen and offshore wind and we are looking forward to expanding the scope with this session.
New Zealand:
- New Zealand is a major player in geothermal energy and has been using geothermal for electricity generation since 1958.
- Geothermal energy contributes around 18% of New Zealand's electricity and about 7-8 PJ directly as heat, mainly for industrial processes and some commercial uses.
- The country's geothermal electricity capacity is over 1,000MW, and there's potential for an additional 1,000MW with half of it in the process of construction and already consented.
- New Zealand also utilizes geothermal hot water and steam for various industrial processes like pulp and paper-making, wood processing, and dairy manufacturing.
Germany:
- Germany has 42 operational deep geothermal energy projects as of February 2022.
- The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) in Germany has a strategy for developing medium-depth and deep geothermal projects, aiming for 10 TWh of geothermal output by 2030.
- The government plans to increase geothermal contributions to heating grids by tenfold, adding at least 100 new geothermal projects by 2030. These projects will be connected to heating networks for residential and industrial use.
- We're bringing together experts and stakeholders from a range of backgrounds to share their insights, exchange ideas, and help shape the future of sustainable energy. Come along to hear from experts from both sides of the globe, engage in discussions and connect with key people in the field.
The event featured speakers from:
- the New Zealand Geothermal Association (NZGA)
- the German Geothermal Association (BVG)
- DMT Petrologic
- Herrenknecht Vertical
- GNS Science
- Seequent Limited
- GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences
