As countries seek reliable and low-emission energy solutions to support decarbonisation and strengthen energy security, geothermal energy is receiving growing attention worldwide. Unlike weather-dependent renewable energy sources, geothermal energy can provide a continuous supply of heat and, in suitable locations, electricity, making it a valuable component of future energy systems.
New Zealand is internationally recognised for its extensive geothermal resources and long-standing experience in geothermal development and utilisation. Geothermal energy already plays an important role in the country's renewable electricity generation and provides valuable opportunities for industrial and direct-use applications.
Germany is also increasing its focus on geothermal energy as part of its heat transition and broader decarbonisation efforts. In particular, geothermal energy is viewed as an important option for supplying district heating networks and reducing emissions from the heating sector. The German government has introduced funding programmes, research initiatives and measures to accelerate the development of geothermal projects and renewable heating infrastructure.
Against this backdrop, the German-New Zealand Energy Dialogue invites stakeholders from industry, research, government and the energy sector to explore current developments and future opportunities in geothermal energy. The webinar will bring together experts from New Zealand and Germany to discuss geothermal policy, market developments, financing mechanisms, research activities and technological innovation. Participants will gain insights into New Zealand's geothermal opportunity, Germany's evolving geothermal landscape, innovative technologies from German companies, and GeoShot NZ's exploration of supercritical geothermal resources. Speakers will also discuss opportunities for knowledge exchange, research collaboration and business engagement between the two countries.
Join us for an engaging discussion on how geothermal energy can contribute to a secure, resilient and low-emission energy future and explore opportunities for cooperation between New Zealand and Germany across government, industry and research.
