The New Zealand Wind Energy Association (NZWEA) has welcomed the passing of the Offshore Renewable Energy Bill, calling it a major step forward for New Zealand’s clean energy transition.

The legislation establishes a new regulatory framework for offshore wind development, providing greater certainty for investment and introducing a two-stage permitting process designed to support responsible project development.

NZWEA says the reform unlocks access to New Zealand’s strong offshore wind resources and positions the technology as a key contributor to future electricity security, affordability, and emissions reduction alongside other renewables.

The association has praised the collaborative effort behind the Bill and says it looks forward to working with Government, iwi, and industry on the next phase of implementation.
