Advancing E-mobility in the Pacific: Insights from Fiji and Tonga

  • News

From 25 April to 3 May 2026, the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (GNZCC), as part of the German Energy Export Initiative project on “E-mobility and Charging Infrastructure in the Pacific Islands,” conducted a business trip to Fiji and Tonga.

The visit provided valuable first-hand insights into the region’s evolving energy landscape and highlighted both the strong momentum towards renewable energy and the practical challenges that continue to shape implementation on the ground.

Across Fiji, discussions with stakeholders revealed a clear commitment to expanding renewable energy use, driven largely by high fuel costs and growing awareness of energy security. Solar energy in particular is gaining traction, with several actors already investing in or planning to expand their capacities. At the same time, the transition towards e-mobility is still at an early stage, with key questions around grid capacity, investment models, and long-term feasibility remaining at the forefront.

A key takeaway is that while interest in electrification is growing, solutions need to be tailored to local conditions. Flexible financing structures, scalable technologies, and long-term partnerships are essential, particularly in markets where upfront investment costs and regulatory frameworks remain challenging.

Engagement with institutional stakeholders further underscored the enabling environment for renewable energy investments. Discussions with the EU Delegation in Fiji and exchanges with Investment Fiji highlighted available support mechanisms, investment incentives, and financing opportunities for international companies entering the market. In parallel, close coordination with the German Embassy in Suva, including the Ambassador and the Deputy Head of Mission, reinforced the strong institutional backing for German private sector engagement in the region.

A particular highlight of the visit was the participation in a public screening hosted by the German Embassy in Fiji, showcasing the documentary series “Stories from the Blue Frontier”. The event brought together local communities whose voices and experiences are central to the series, offering powerful insights into the realities of climate change in the Pacific, as well as the resilience and perspectives of those most directly affected. Beyond the formal meetings, this moment underscored the importance of community engagement and storytelling in shaping the regional dialogue on climate and energy.

In Tonga, the visit highlighted the country’s ambitious energy transition goals, including a target of reaching 70% renewable electricity generation by 2030. With the support of the Honorary German Consul in Nuku’alofa, GNZCC was able to engage directly with the Office of the Prime Minister and key government authorities.

These discussions provided important insights into Tonga’s strategic priorities, particularly in relation to electrifying transport, strengthening infrastructure, and expanding renewable energy capacity. At the same time, structural challenges became evident, including grid limitations, land tenure complexities, and the need for access to financing.

Another critical aspect identified during the visit is the importance of local capacity building. While renewable energy deployment is increasing, there is a growing need for skilled professionals to ensure the long-term operation and maintenance of installed systems.

Overall, the trip confirmed that Fiji and Tonga offer promising opportunities for international cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and e-mobility. However, successful project implementation will depend on strong local partnerships, adaptable business models, and an integrated approach that combines infrastructure, financing, and capacity development.

The insights gained during the visit will directly inform GNZCC’s upcoming digital conference on 16 June 2026, which aims to connect German companies with stakeholders across the Pacific region and facilitate concrete market entry opportunities, including targeted B2B exchanges.
