Labour Trade spokesperson Damian O’Connor stated that New Zealand’s politicians are united on global trade. Speaking at the inaugural EU/NZ Business Summit in Auckland recently, he advised Europe that there will be no “U-Turns” on trade due to New Zealand being a nation that's highly dependent upon trade and relationship with others, and that they must move forward in a harmonious and united way.
He reminded the summit that when the prospect of the EU trade agreement was put forward, people were enthusiastic and positive but thought that NZ was perhaps a little ambitious. However, due to trust being prevalent at all states of negotiations, the EU FTA is way beyond the expectations of conservative officials and has increased NZ exports by NZD $2 billion since the agreement entered into force last year.
