At the end of August 2025, the New Zealand Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi NZTA) approved the investment decision and construction financing for the four-lane expansion of the Hawke’s Bay Expressway. The groundbreaking ceremony is planned for November 2025, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2029. The project includes, among other things, the construction of two new overpasses as well as widening State Highway 2 from two to four lanes.
