Pilot project: Embracing Sustainable Construction Practices: Lessons from Germany's Building Industry for New Zealand Retrofitting
Embracing Sustainable Construction Practices: Lessons from Germany's Building Industry for New Zealand Retrofitting
A project of the Energy Export Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action
The need for energy-efficient retrofitting of the detached single-family homes typical in New Zealand is enormous. The houses, which were mainly built in the 1970s and 1980s, do not meet current building standards and were not energy-efficient when they were built and were often even harmful to health due to mold growth.
Due to the great potential for German suppliers, the German New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Inc. has successfully carried out a consortium project with the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ), an independent research institution in New Zealand, in 2022/2023 with the topic "Pilot project for the model project for energy-efficient refurbishment and retrofitting of single-family homes in New Zealand".
The "Ecovolution Alliance" consortium (hereinafter referred to as "the consortium") was able to successfully present its technology during the specialist conference in May 2023 and the subsequent discussions with social housing organisations, district authorities, architects, etc. and is currently in talks with various project sponsors to specify projects for the use of the technology.
This successful implementation and these specific approaches for the use of German technology in retrofit projects should strengthen the application and decision in favor of German climate-friendly technologies with a subsequent specialist workshop, which should include the presentation of the first projects as well as a practical part on installation and maintenance.
The target group of the event are representatives of organisations and institutions, especially from the field of social housing (retrofit), as well as companies from the construction sector and accompanying service providers from New Zealand. These companies are to be trained directly by the manufacturers of the German climate-friendly energy solutions on the German products and enter into a professional exchange in order to be able to present the advantages of the German solutions. Preparations will be made in cooperation with the consortium.
