Participation
On 08 and 09 October 2024, RENAC AG, in cooperation with the AHK New Zealand, is organizing an informational event on off-grid solutions for the tourism industry on the Pacific Islands. During the event, we will provide German companies and decision-makers with up-to-date information on the regulatory framework, current tenders, and funding and financing opportunities for off-grid solutions projects in the tourism sector on the Pacific Islands of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. Alongside AHK New Zealand, we have invited local experts from all four islands to present the latest market developments and respond to your individual questions. Additionally, German experts will discuss project financing, credit insurance, and legal framework conditions.

Information on the target market
The integration of renewable energy in the tourism sector of the Pacific Islands offers the possibility of region-wide sustainable development. The Pacific Islands benefit from excellent natural conditions for renewable energy production, political will, and concrete financial incentives on both micro and macroeconomic levels. The enormous expenditures on the import of fossil fuels consume a large share of the (limited) foreign currency resources in many island states, often accounting for up to 15% of the total local GDP (compared to under 2% in New Zealand or Germany). For example, Tonga's expenditures on fossil fuels in 2021 were nearly 19 million euros (or just under 5% of GDP) lower than in 2012, while the share of renewable energy in electricity production grew by over 10% during the same period.
Moreover, the governments of the Pacific Island nations are often among the most vigorous advocates for more ambitious climate policies in global negotiations. International support is essential for achieving the NDC goals in all four PICs, as there is often a lack of expertise and resources locally. Due to the geography of the islands, off-grid systems present excellent market opportunities in various sectors, such as tourism and the maritime sector.
The "Made in Germany" brand is seen as a symbol of high quality, durability, and innovative technology, giving small and medium-sized German enterprises (SMEs) a unique competitive advantage. The electricity, land transport, sea transport, and tourism sectors are among the most important sectors in the NDCs of all four island states under the Paris Agreement. Overall, the Pacific Islands offer a promising environment for German SMEs in the area of off-grid renewable energy solutions in various sectors. By providing customized technologies, consulting services, and training, German companies can not only contribute to improving the islands' energy infrastructure but also promote more sustainable development and resilience in the region.
