AI impact on New Zealand work productivity

06/09/2024

A new report from the AI Forum, AI in Action: Exploring the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Aotearoa’s Productivity, gives the first detailed snapshot of how New Zealand businesses are using AI and the extent to which it is displacing human workers. Only 8% of businesses reported that AI had displaced tasks performed by their workers. Where there was displacement, it was minimal, just 5% to 10% of a worker’s job. The number probably understates the level of displacement, says Dr Andrew Lensen, research author. “Organisations don’t tend to want to admit that they have fired people because of AI,” he says. 29% of the business people surveyed also reported that using AI has reduced the need to hire employees.
