Embedding foresight into sustainability to strengthen resilience

Today's problems come from yesterday's solutions. And today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s outcomes.
The priority of urgent issues is constantly changing and new topics are coming to the fore. Addressing current issues with gradual improvement targets is no longer sufficient to build resilience in an organisation.

Strategic foresight is used by many successful corporations to model, understand and shape the future to their advantage. It was developed partly in reaction to the failure of many conventional approaches to forecasting.

In a three hour, hands-on workshop we will demonstrate how strategic foresight can be used to move from an operational to a more forward looking discussion, grounded in practical business context and how this can help finding solutions for a sustainable future.

Or as a pioneer of scenario-thinking, Arie de Gues, said, "The only relevant discussions about the future are those where we succeed in shifting the question from whether something will happen, to what would we do if it did".

What to expect:

1. Introduction to foresight techniques, e.g. the Three Horizons Framework, and how they can be applied to mitigate risk

2. Ports of Auckland will report on why and how PoA are using foresighting techniques to build resilience.

3. Participants will apply the Three Horizons framework to sector specific case studies

Our speakers:

Phil Tate, Consultant Futurist: Phil assists clients across a range of sectors to develop strategic thinking and conversations aimed toward a more regenerative future.

Angelene Powell, General Manager Container Terminal Operations will talk about Port of Auckland’s commitment and experience in using Future Approaches.

Jeff Vickers, Technical Director at thinkstep: Jeff has used foresighting in his research.
